Chippy effect chalk paint tutorial

One popular chalk paint technique that adds character and vintage charm is the "chippy" effect. This distressed look, reminiscent of weathered surfaces, can elevate your pieces from plain to rustic chic. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the steps to achieve a chippy effect with chalk paint.

Choosing the Right Furniture and Supplies:

Start by selecting a piece of furniture with interesting details like raised edges, corners, or intricate carvings. This will enhance the chippy effect by allowing the paint to naturally wear in these areas. Gather your supplies, including chalk paint in your desired colours, a high-quality paintbrush, sandpaper (medium and fine grit), and a clear wax or topcoat. Choose colours that contrast, such as Terrific Teal and Clotted Cream.

Preparation:

Clean your furniture thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or old finish. Sand the surface lightly to create a smooth base for the paint. Unlike traditional paint, chalk paint adheres well to surfaces with minimal prep work.

Applying the Chalk Paint:

Apply the first coat of chalk paint evenly, covering the entire piece. Allow it to dry completely before applying a second coat. Don't worry about achieving a flawless finish; imperfections will contribute to the chippy effect.

Creating the Chippy Effect:

For the magic to happen, apply a thin layer of beeswax or petroleum jelly on areas where you want the paint to chip. These substances create a resist, preventing the second coat of paint from adhering tightly.

Second Coat and Distressing:

Paint the second coat in a contrasting colour, over the entire piece, covering the areas treated with wax or petroleum jelly. As the paint dries, the resist will cause it to crack and chip in a beautifully distressed manner. Once dry, use medium-grit sandpaper to lightly distress the edges and raised surfaces, enhancing the weathered appearance.

Finishing Touch:

Seal your masterpiece with a clear wax or topcoat to protect the finish and give it a subtle sheen. Stand back and admire your furniture's newfound chippy charm!
